Improving Safety Through Quick Build Project Implementation
The Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (BMPO) and Broward County Government (BCG) collaboratively secured a $5 million grant from the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program to create the Broward Regional Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (BSAP). The plan emphasizes data-driven methods to identify high risk locations and apply targeted interventions to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes in Broward County.
The BSAP allows the region to reevaluate the planning and designing of projects to achieve unified regional safety goals. A key component of the plan is the Quick Build Guide, designed to assist municipalities across Broward County with the planning and implementation of rapid-deployment safety projects.
Following the completion of the Quick Build Guide, Urbe Studio supported the Broward MPO with the development of vision concepts for a series of quick-build safety projects across six municipalities. These initial designs focused on the application of safety countermeasures on local high-risk multi-lane roadways as well as on neighborhood corridors to address local crash hot spots and enhance neighborhood connectivity.
Quick build projects were planned for the following locations:
Cleary Blvd - City of Plantation
NW 46th Ave - City of Plantation
SW 10th St - City of Deerfield Bch
Blatt Blvd - City of Weston
NW 94th Ave - City of Sunrise
Sistrunk Blvd - City of Fort Lauderdale
NW 49th Ave - City of Lauderhill
19th & 20th Ave - City of Hollywood
Key safety countermeasures considered include:
Lane Repurposing
Protected Bike Lanes
Mid-block Crossings
Pedestrian Refuge Islands
On-street Parking
Daylighting
Median Extensions
Left-turn Hardenings
Tightened Curb Radii
High-visibility Crosswalks
In late 2025, the BMPO delivered preliminary design concepts to municipal staff to help advance projects toward full funding and implementation. Each municipality will lead internal coordination, review and sign-off within their own engineering and public work departments as well as with Broward County Traffic Engineering Division (BCTED), which will verify compliance with local and federal standards.
