Improving Safety Through Quick Build Project Implementation

In 2023 the City of Orlando Transportation Department developed a Quick Build Guide to help deliver transportation safety enhancements at an accelerated pace. The City developed this guide to provide information on how, where, when and why to implement quick build projects. The guide is designed to empower city staff and community and neighborhood organizations to initiate and implement projects that make it easier to walk, bike, roll and skate in Orlando, strengthening the city’s culture of collaboration.

Following the completion of the Quick Build Guide, Urbe Studio supported the City’s Transportation Department with the implementation of a first batch of Quick Build infrastructure projects in Downtown. This initial implementation phase included intersection murals and artistic crosswalks.

Intersection murals are artistic installations painted within an intersection. These murals are not traffic control devices even though they might help reduce vehicle speeds and increase driver attention. Intersection murals are usually installed along with other safety or placemaking projects, such as curb extensions and temporary plazas. Artistic crosswalks can help improve crosswalk and pedestrian visibility, as well as reinforce the community’s character. Artistic crosswalk installations are installed fully within the already-delineated white crosswalk markings.

Intersection murals were planned for the following locations:

  • Orange Ave and Pine St

  • Orange Ave and Central Blvd

  • Orange Ave and Washington St

  • Orange Ave and Church St

  • Rosalind Ave and Washington St

Eight locations were planned to have artistic bulb-outs and crosswalks installed:

  • Orange Ave near Central Blvd

  • Intersection of Orange Ave and Robinson St

  • Intersection of Orange Ave and Concord St

  • Intersection of Rosalind Ave and Jackson St

  • Intersection of Rosalind Ave and Church St

  • Intersection of Rosalind Ave and Washington St

  • Intersection of Magnolia Ave and Amelia St

  • Intersection of Magnolia Ave and Concord St

In early January 2024, the City began the installation phase of intersection murals, curb extensions and bulb-outs, and crosswalks at these locations along Orange Avenue.
