Improving Mobility and Safety Through Data-Driven Planning
The City of West Miami is advancing a Transportation Action Plan (TAP), a comprehensive strategy to enhance mobility and prioritize safety for residents, businesses, and visitors. Supported by a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant, the plan establishes a data and community-driven framework to improve multimodal transportation conditions and reduce traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. The TAP serves as a forward-looking roadmap to strengthen access to key corridors, improve roadway performance, and guide future infrastructure investments that support the city’s long-term economic and community development goals.
The methodology for the TAP combines technical safety and mobility analysis with robust community engagement. The project team is conducting historical crash analysis, multimodal network assessments, and accessibility and connectivity evaluations to identify high-injury locations, systemic risk factors, and gaps in existing transportation infrastructure. Context-sensitive strategies are being developed to balance safety, land use, freight activity, and local travel patterns, while aligning recommendations with federal and state safety standards and regional transportation policies.
Public engagement is central to the planning process. The team is implementing interactive mapping and survey tools, hosting community workshops, and engaging residents and stakeholders through public events and advisory committees. This approach ensures that local knowledge and community priorities directly shape the plan’s recommendations. The engagement process also supports transparent decision-making and equitable outcomes, helping define where improvements are most needed and how future investments should be prioritized.
As part of the EXP-led project team, Urbe Studio is providing expertise in multimodal planning and community engagement. Our team contributes to advising on evidence-based safety countermeasures, project demonstration activities, and creating clear visual and graphic materials that translate technical findings into accessible public communications.
Upon completion, the TAP will deliver a prioritized list of short, mid, and long-term transportation and safety improvements, implementation strategies, and funding guidance to position West Miami for future infrastructure investment and grant opportunities.
